The Story Behind the Ride

About the topless ride to end alzheimer's

Over 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s destroys the lives of those diagnosed and the loved ones around them. We must End ALZ!
2022 was the first Topless ride to End Alzheimer’s. We plan to hold this ride annually. This event is to raise money for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the Alzheimer’s Association. Papa’s Peeps team captain, Rachael, lost her father to Alzheimer’s. Alzenda & Friends team captain, Theresa, lost her grandfather. We ladies mean business when it comes to finding a cure to this disease.
We both enjoy riding on the back our guy’s motorcycles or in a convertible or Jeep. We love that feeling of sun on our face and wind in our hair. The open air feeling of FREEDOM. Freedom is something a person with Alzheimer’s gradually loses over time.
We invite you to join us as we take a ride through the back roads of Coastal Virginia topless, not confined by a roof over our heads as we raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and funds to find a cure.

My Story

Why do I want to find an End to Alzheimer’s?  I have seen personally, professionally and as a volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association what dementia does to folks. Brilliant minded folks who cared for themselves, raised a family, had a great career, ran a prosperous business, fought for our country are reduced to a shell of a person. I have watched families struggle with the day to day task of caring for their loved one.  Dressing, bathing, feeding those who once cared for them.  Going behind them to make sure the stove wasn’t left on.  Hiding car keys and selling cars to prevent them from driving and getting into an accident.  Putting deadbolts on house doors so they can not wander outside and get lost.  Putting them into a facility to be cared for and paying that bill.
My grandfather had Alzheimer’s. It is thought to be hereditary, so I wonder who will be the next person in our family to be diagnosed. Will I get it?  Which friend will slowly fade away and forget who I am? From whom will the next story I hear of living with dementia come from? Might it be you?
Research in the fight to end Alzheimer’s is making progress – but there is no cure yet.  We are not even sure what causes dementia.  So I raise funds and walk each year in the Walk To End Alzheimer’s so that one day dementia will not be something people have to worry about. Memories should last forever.
